The first ever Ides of June fishing tournament was held in mid June 1998. There was a grand total of 4 boats competing. The tournament was spawned from fishing smack talk during a late night poker game. The original name was the Ides of June No Tackle Invitational. The first ever Ides of June champions were Captain Brian O'Hara and 1st mate Rick Rademacher. Brian and Rick won the tournament with a smoker 7 pound kingfish, caught on "The Sieve" a 14ft aluminum Sea Nymph with a 9.9 Evinrude engine. It is believed that 1st place received $100. There was no second place boat. There was a small gathering at Spanish River Park after the tournament for socializing.

Captain Joe Chaison and Captain Tracy Scala were co-champions this year. Both Captains came into the same school of 1 pound peanut dolphin and limited out. Co-champions were declared. A great feast of mahi and beer ensued. It is believed there were about 6 boats involved in the tournament.
